Megan, a 34-year-old housewife from San Diego California spent her days dreaming of a picture-perfect home in the most quaint neighborhood: a house with character and charm that was something she could be proud of.
She was addicted to the “rehab” movement – a true “Joanna Gaines” wannabe. And she knew that if she put her mind to it, she could bring her vision to life.
But not everyone shared her vision. Her husband Ryan thought she was absolutely crazy. “Why do you want to buy this old house?” He would say, “Its going to be a money pit.”
When she thought of her husband Ryan and their 18 month old child – She imagined all the details of her dream house. Because she was able to imagine the bigger picture; she was able to discover even more.
But it wasn’t easy. She knew that no matter how hard she believed in her dream house renovation ideas; there would always be unexpected obstacles. What would those obstacles be? Imagine everything that could go wrong. She only succeeded because she continued forward no matter what.
START WITH BABY STEPS
The first step forward was to tear down the old to build the new. Here you can see the remnants of the add-on and the deck – both lay disheveled and demolished on the ground.
In the picture you can see a blue ladder leaning forward against the almost 100 year old home. Imagine how great it feels to finally have taken that first step towards your dream home. Megan could see now that there was no turning back.

MAKE ROOM TO MOVE FORWARD
She tore down the old walls to her future dream home. This 2 bedroom 1 Bathroom 700 square foot home in San Diego, California was about to separate from the path of the masses and become a vivid reality – all because she kept moving forward.
ROOM TO GROW
You can see this future dream house more clearly in this picture. You can clearly imagine the commitment it requires to successfully take that first step on the path that separates you from the crowd. Despite the setback that was around the corner; she bravely continued to take those steps.
CARVE A PATH
If you want a dream home; there will be setbacks. You can see in this picture the trenches had to be dug. And as the trenches were being painstakingly shoveled, the hit their first snag: Clay in the soil! The City Inspector refused to approve the plans going forward, so the had to call a geologist and get the soil tested. Lucklily, you can conquer those setbacks like she did – one at a time. It wasn’t easy, but because she continued on – it was very rewarding.
Here you can clearly see the progress has continued on her dream home. The soil test came back okay – and the geologist gave the “go ahead” to continue. From this angle; the picture shows that the trenches are complete- it’s time to move on. But you won’t believe what happened next…
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Everything began moving faster for a little while. That was until they found out that the structure’s foundation was completely rotted, and needed new supports throughout. Despite what’s about to happen; her strength of will to walk a different path from the crowd will continue.
THIS IS UPLIFTING
Here you can see in this picture; the foundation needed to be completely demolished, and her dream home is now resting on support beams. You can imagine crouching down; to take a look below the house. It’s been almost 100 years since this dirt saw light – only seeing light now because she persevered onward. Once the house was lifted up, the next critical step was a miracle.
APART FROM THE CROWD
She continued to set herself apart from the crowd and prove to everyone that you’re dreams can come true – if you just keep going.
LOOK AT ALL THE TILES
While the foundation experts were busy with Rebar and structural issues, Megan would keep her vision alive by shopping for the perfect finishings for her dream home. Imagine walking down the isle of your local tile store – picture the endless rows of every kind of tile that exists. What textures would you like the feel of?
What shades; hues and colors would you be attracted to? She didn’t just pick out tiles for her dream home – She discovered the perfect tiles because she knew she had to see them all before she could continue.
IT’S BECOMING CLEAR
This is a close up view of her “up cycled” square glass window – something she bought from her neighbor for a whopping $40 – a thoughtful touch to the perfect dream home she imagined.
To distract herself from the foundation nightmare – Megan kept designing away… knowing that if she could see it, she could create it. Here you can see these beautiful pieces of square glass ( also “up cycled” ) becoming ready to stand out from the crowd in this fast paced dream home renovation.
THIS PROJECT DEPENDS ON YOU
She knew that she couldn’t give up now. She had already committed to her goal of separating herself and her family’s home from the crowd. But another terrible snag was just around the corner. Her husband kept calling it the “Money Pit” and if you see what happened next, you may start to believe him.
ROCK N ROLL
This is the rubble from the 100-year-old foundation that literally crumbled underneath the home. But this didn’t stop Megan…When you imagine leaving the crowd behind in your dust trail; that dust can get a bit, well – rocky. Pictured here is a large pile of rocks from the ground; solid and lasting much like her will to continue.
KEEP THE BIG PICTURE IN MIND
Although it seems like an eternity, it’s only been a little over a week since she started making her dream home a reality. Here we see an encapsulating photograph of where very soon; rebar will be arriving just in time to save the day and continue the journey.
AS ABOVE SO BELOW
This picture shows the extensive rebar that makes up the framework must be prepared for concrete. It’s well on it’s way!
IMAGINE YOUR DREAM KITCHEN
In between the grueling construction days, Megan was busy designing: Her dream kitchen. Now, picture yourself opening your new refrigerator in your own sleek creation. Think of all the small details you would choose to have – After months of searching she had found the vision to work from, and here is the dream kitchen she wants to emulate.
HER PATH CONTINUES WITH REBAR
A close up photograph of the successfully installed rebar. Once the rebar was firmly in place – a catastrophic setback occurred. Despite what happens next; progress pushed forward.
100 YEAR OLD SEWER PIPES
Oh no! In her journey to secure her dream home she discovered that underneath her family’s home lay these 100 year old sewer pipes – They had to go! They were literally leaking raw sewage into the ground. At this point, even Megan was doubting if anything was going right in this project. But it was way too far to turn back, so she put her head down and continued. What happened next surprised even Megan.
CEMENT IN PLACE
The cement truck has now arrived!
PAVE THE PATH
They finally got the “okay” from the City to pour the Concrete. And with the cement being prepared as quickly as possible; she found herself growing in anticipation of the outcome on her dream home. She couldn’t wait for the walls to start going up. She just prayed this would be the last delay (but it wasn’t).
FROM ALPHA TO OMEGA
As the cement truck kept turning the cement, they only had 30 minutes to get all of the cement poured, or else the concrete would set. The timer was set!
FILLING IN THE HOLES
The cement had to be poured like a race horse running a track. You can see from this picture how complex and meticulous this project became. After approval from the local authorities and proper permits were given – her dream home was on it’s way to becoming a reality faster than ever.
ROCK SOLID CONVICTION
Just when she thought she was out of the woods – the fireplace crumbled and needed to be rebuilt entirely. It was a bad day, but it had a silver lining…
JUST ANOTHER FRIDAY
The concrete had been successfully poured, and it was time to lay the floor! With the floor coming together swiftly; her dream home was now speeding towards completion. She kept hoping the worst was behind her…
CLEARLY THE BEST
Because of the delays, the windows arrived WAY TO EARLY with no where to go. There was now a risk the thousands of dollars of Windows would be stolen, or bent, as they had to be left on the construction site. What happened next was just lucky…
FLOOR IS DOWN – TEMPO IS UP
The floor was finally down, the framing wood had arrived, and this dream home is now becoming a reality. In this picture you can clearly see how fast progress is speeding up now. The stakes get higher every day; but she continues to move forward with her dream faster than ever.
BUILDING WALLS IN SAN DIEGO
When the first wall went up, her husband finally smiled and relaxed. Even he started getting excited for their new dream home! Megan pictured her dream home all along; with her husband Ryan and their 18 month old baby – she certainly pictured them by her side during the project. With some help from her at first skeptical husband; she continued to turn her dream home into a reality.
All of a sudden, work stopped! Megan was devestated, as she got a simple text from the Framing Crew: “We got drunk.” Be back tomorrow. Here you see what they left: a chaotic scene of frenzied framework; scattered wooden planks and home supplies. Imagine all the thought and planning that went into this – and although it was only one day, it seemed like eternity. Megan needed to have this home done! And She stuck to that plan no matter what and pushed forward.
A NEW ANGLE
Her mood improved, because the next day, her roofing trusses arrived. This is her standing proudly next to the trusses for her new dream home; She is now ready to push forward with more motivation than ever – to make her imagined dream a reality.
UP THEY GO
She could barely wait to get them up! Imagine how proud she felt when those trusses went up. With the project nearing completion; the dream home progress now continues faster than ever, and they were gaining momentum. The crown jewel of the home had arrived…
THINGS ARE SPEEDING UP NOW

The homeless windows now were securely in their “forever” place…Pictured are a few of the finishing touches on the La Cantina doors; which were installed very swiftly. She thought they were cruising downhill…(Until)…
The HVAC people couldn’t fit the air conditioning ducting into the roof! It was just too small. Unfortunately, 100 year old homes didn’t leave room for air conditioning ducting… So they had to get creative…Imagine you are 103 days into your dream home renovations – that’s exactly where she found herself. With the air conditioning ducts barely secured in place – she marched onward.
When distressed about the setbacks, Megan went back to her vision: and continued to DESIGN. Here, you can see her interior design concept for her dream home – Impressively accurate when you compare it to the final project.
IF YOU’RE NOT GROWING YOU’RE DYING
And as she waited for walls and finishes, she got busy with things she could grow: A succulent wall. She used a pallet from the building supplies, and created a Pinterest-worthy Picture of absolutely beautiful plants – perfect for a dream home. With these priceless carbon dioxide producing plants; the project continued to wrap itself up in a speedy yet spectacular fashion.
THAT’S A WRAP
With the walls to her dream home now wrapped – it was almost time to “wrap up” her imaginative renovation project. The results she got not only set her apart from the crowd, but they also deeply inspired her to continue sprinting toward the finish line.

20. STAYING MOTIVATED TO FINISH
Megan took on one final “side project.” She needed 100 year old bricks to rebuild her patio and crumbled fireplace.
