We can all agree that the bond between a man and his dog is not only time honored – but sacred. Most dog owners strongly feel that their dog is not only just a “friend” – but family. This man embarked on a journey to build his very own vision of doggy paradise in his backyard with his four legged companion by his side the whole way.
His best friend was getting on in dog years and so he raced against the clock to complete his project. Although he had no way of knowing how little time his dog had left; this man certainly made the most of that time.
Not only will this story make you want to go hug your dog – but the end results of this DIY project will drop your jaw in amazement.
FIRST THINGS FIRST – EXCAVATION.
It’s good to have friends – and having a friend that owns an excavation company is no exception. The very first thing our dog loving landscaper did was hire his friend to dig the hole upon which he could start building his dream.

ROUGH VIEW OF THE OTHER SIDE.
Rome wasn’t built in a day. However; with excavation freshly completed and the smell of dirt in the air, he rolled up his sleeves and really started getting to work.

STARTING THE POND LINER.
In order to secure his pond from leakage, the first thing he did was to make sure he used a heavy duty liner. Here you can see the 200 x 50 foot liner stretched out across the swimming pond. After the liner was in place; he set his sights on pouring sand.
DUMPING THE SAND.
A dump truck enthusiastically empties the last of what turned out to be 60 tons of sand out onto the liner! In fact, he had so much sand that he recruited his wife and son to help spread the sand out.
A HELPING HAND.
The more the merrier – at least that’s how this project gets done. Here you can see his wife and son working diligently to even out the sand across the pond liner; a helpful start to what is about to become a magnificent project.
STAYING COOL IN THE HEAT.
THE STONE HAS ARRIVED.
First, he had 70 tons of river stone delivered.
STARTING TO COME TOGETHER.
Here you can see the swimming hole part of the pond; with most of the river stones already meticulously placed there by hand.
After he placed all those stones; it rained and filled up some of the pond. It would have to be drained, of course, but that was only a minor setback. Before long he was back to work on his vision.
He began placing the river rocks along the “steps” of his “natural” water fall for support.
FLAGSTONE WATERFALL STEPS.
Next, he put down flagstone on the top of the “steps” of the waterfall.
This project is starting to get pumped up – literally. Here you can see the 3 inch PVC pipe that will run water to the pond. The two chairs ( which can barely be made out in the distance ) illustrate the massive scale of this swimming pond as it starts to come together.
It should come as no shock that electricity plays an important role in the filtration of a fine swimming pond.
WATER PUMP IS WORKING.
Water is now pumping through the filter and back into the pond! A lone golf cart sits in the background; yet another indicator of the massive scale of this swimming pond project as it speeds to completion.
After draining some water; this area was ready for some strategic rock placement – an important part of the swimming pond that will maintain water levels.
MORTAR BAGS FOR THE WATERFALL.
Here you can see the makings of a waterfall – rocks with mortar bags poured over them prove to be the fastest route to success.
A WATERFALL SETBACK.
After crafting this beautiful wall for the waterfall; one mistake left it washed away within days. Having no fear however; he just kept on working and built one even better right on top of it.
WALL OF WATER.
Once the new wall was built; a beautiful and serene waterfall appeared.
WALL OF WATER VIEW FROM FARTHER BACK.
This is what the swimming ponds waterfall looked like from farther back. You can see the thousands of tiny stones that have been spread out along the bottom of the pond.
A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step – and this journey still has a few steps to go! Here you can see how he dug out steps in the dirt and put down square stones.
A little mortar and some more river rocks make these steps really stand out.
ON THE LEVEL.
Using more bags of mortar; he creates two areas for wading and sitting on either side of the pond.
A little extra mortar can go a long way. After spraying it down with the hose; he waits for it to dry.
Here is a great shot of the retaining wall alongside one side of the swimming pond.
RETAINING WALL OTHER SIDE.
Here is another shot – this one from the opposite side of the pond. This thing is coming together fast!
He bought some Cattails off the internet for 2 dollars a piece. Here you can see them sprouting super fast; as the newly added water in the pond helps them grow quickly.
A DOG IN CATTAILS.
Here we see the real star of the show – furry and adorable. His final years were no doubt full of love and happiness as he roamed around this project with his beloved owner.
Adding some beautiful purple Mexican Petunias gives the bank a nice look and feel. Things are starting to come together now and the project is almost finished.
He takes another small break – relaxing beside the water with his dogs, before he gets back to work.
With a billowing fire in the background; it’s easy to see from this panoramic view of the project that things are soon coming to completion. You can see the water line going all the way to the top of the waterfall.
STARTING THE CIRCLE PATIO.
Work now begins on the viewing patio next to the swimming pond as a circular area is sectioned out.
CONCRETE FOR THE PATIO.
With a little help from a feline friend; the patio gets some more detailed concrete work finished up. It won’t be long now before this dream swimming pond is complete!
PATIO IS DONE.
This is the day time view from the patio, looking out across the swimming pond. We’re almost at the end of this epic project and the best is still yet to come.
With a little extra help from a furry feline; several lights are placed upon the patio. This helps light the swimming pond viewing area during night time; and also serves as a congregation area for house guests and puppy dogs.
STARTING THE FIRE PIT.
What paradise swimming pond would be complete without a fantastic looking fire pit? Here you can see the wet concrete being poured as one of the final installments.
FIRE PIT IS COMING TOGETHER NICELY.
This concrete ring of fire is beginning to look finished already!
MASONRY HAS NEVER BEEN SO EASY.
As you can see; this fire pit is almost complete and ready to serve as a congregation area during long nights beside the finished swimming pond.
FINISHED FIRE PIT.
Now that the fire pit is finished; you can see how he stacked some split wood along side the banks of the pond. This pleasant night time scene could be something right out of a Norman Rockwell painting – but it gets better still.
QUICK PEEK AT THE MACHINERY BEING USED.
Before we do the big reveal; here is a picture of the heavy machinery that was used to move some of the earlier sand and rocks around the swimming pond. There’s a tool for every job. However, don’t forget the most important tool of all…
The most important tool of all is willpower. This guy had amazing dedication to his dream of creating a swimming pond for his aging dog – and you’re about to see that dream become a reality.
This is the view of the water fall, after the foliage begun to grow around it. You can almost hear the trickling of water over the river stones; moving into the pond.
FINISHED POND FAR VIEW.
This pond is looking better and better.
FAR OUT VIEW.
His vision had quickly became a reality. These next few pictures are astounding.
Nightfall on the Last Night of The Build.
Here is the photo from the last night of the build. As the sun set upon the swimming pond project; the next morning the sun would rise for the first time upon a completed swimming pond.
You Wont Believe This Is How It Started.
Flashback for comparison: This is what we started with…
One Man Can Change The World.
FLASHBACK: The first day the digging started. He had no idea his project would become such a touching tribute to his dog. You won’t believe the finished pictures.
With the end of the project in clear sight; he pressed on. No detail was missed on this wonderful watery project.
A COUPLE SWIMMING PUPS.
Playing in the water is mandatory and these two dogs definitely had a splash on this day. As sad as it is the know these were some of the last days for one of these guys; it is comforting to know that those last days were filled with such joy.
ONE FINAL BREAK.
Anyone would need a break after all the work that’s been done here. It was truly a labor of love. This man built his own paradise in his backyard and shared it with his dog.
NIGHT VIEW OF THE FINISHED POND.
This is a perfect moment shared between a man and his dog. After a long journey; they can finally relax on the sand next to their paradise pond as the sunset sinks in the horizon.
If you can dream it, you can do it.
If you believe in yourself like this man did, you can accomplish huge things. From humble beginnings ( above ) to a beautiful finished project.
Finally, we have a stunning aerial shot of the property. You can truly see how massive this pond became; and even though his dog is not with him in the physical form, the memories made during the project will last a lifetime and he will always be there in spirit.
A Beautiful Waterfall.
This serene waterfall most certainly served as a place of reflection and appreciation for the accomplishment at hand.
All the work is done finally & although the man’s dog passed away shortly after this photo was taken; his memory will still live on in the form of a touching tribute swimming pond.
The Sun Set’s on a dream completed.
As the sun set on his swimming pond; it was a positively affirming feeling. He had ( with the help of his furry friend ) built a touchingly beautiful paradise in his own backyard. His dog may have passed away, but his memory lives on in this swimming pond.
